Think You Know Han? Think Again.

HAN (part 1)

At the age of eleven Mateo “Han” Lozano moved with his family to the small farming town of Dripping Springs, Texas. Born to a school teacher mother and horticulturist father, Han was a long way from his native Spain. Still, he loved his newly adapted home... the picturesque landscape that spread as far as the eye could see, the rhythmic melodies of the farm animals as they rode the gentle breeze to the small farmhouse, and the physical chores that come with farm life, but he loved the open sky the most, the stars...

For Han, life became an idyllic routine. First, he would rise with his father tending to the crops and the animals, he would then scarf down breakfast and catch a ride with his mom to the local schoolhouse where she taught. Despite her thick Spanish accent and her somewhat unorthodox teaching style – she often encouraged her students to question her grasp on the sciences and encourage them to “test” them for themselves through various experiments – she was a favorite among both faculty and students alike. After school, while his mother graded papers, tutored, took parent-teacher conferences, and performed the many other duties that came with her position, Han would run off to the local arcade with his friends where he would spend hours playing Galaxa, Pac-Man, and the like, followed by a quick double chocolate shake at Charlie's before meeting his Mom at the corner of Castle Bay and Smith Road at exactly six thirty.

This routine went on for years and now at seventeen the arcade games were replaced by friends and his steady girlfriend Beth, and Charlie's was replaced by baseball practice – a sport in which he excelled. As was routine, Han would shoulder his backpack and lug his baseball gear the two blocks to his longstanding pickup spot with his mom. Tonight he hoped that he could just drop off his mom, skip family dinner and and take the family Chevy to grab Beth for their seven o'clock movie date. The Karate Kid II was playing and he wasn't going to miss it, young Danielson was just like him – a fish out of water. Besides, he was off to UCLA in the fall and his time with Beth was short, more importantly, they still hadn't gone “all the way.”

Han waited, twenty minutes had passed, and the nearest pay phone was a ten minute walk away. Not to mention, he had all his gear. His mom has been late before he reasoned, maybe one of her conferences ran over or she had papers to grade, whatever the reason he was now definitely going to miss The Karate Kid II and more importantly his chances of scoring that night were now slim to none.

An hour passed, when a local deputy pulled up alongside Han and motioned for him to come over, Han felt his heartbeat rise, he repressed the unexpected urge to throw up. He trembled uncontrollably as he approached the police car, but it was the somber look on the deputy's face that told him all that he needed to know...
